While many species live outdoors without causing problems, some regularly enter buildings and form colonies close to properties
Most infestations occur during the warmer months, when ants become active and begin searching for food.
Black Garden Ants
The black garden ant (Lasius niger) is the species most likely to be inside your home. They usually nest in soil outdoors, often beneath paving slabs, garden paths, lawns, or patio stones.
But worker ants leave the nest to search for food. When they find a reliable food source, they leave scent trails that other ants follow. If the food source is in your home, long trails of ants can suddenly appear in your kitchen or along floors.
Black garden ants are especially attracted to sugary foods such as fruit, syrup, jam, and sweet drinks. Crumbs, pet food, and food residue also attract them.
Although the nest usually remains outside, worker ants can enter homes cracks in brickwork, gaps around doors, damaged seals around windows, and small openings around pipes.
In severe cases you’ll need professional pest control that identifies the nest and deals with the colony rather than simply treating the visible ants indoors.
Flying Ants
Flying ants are reproductive black garden ants that emerge during warm weather to start new colonies.
This event is now known as Flying Ant Day, although swarms appear over several days across different regions.
Both male and female ants grow wings during this stage. After mating, males die and fertilised females shed their wings before searching for a new nesting location.
Large flying ant swarms are a normal part of the ant life cycle.
If large numbers of ants begin appearing around doors, windows, or loft spaces after swarming, it may suggest the presence of a nest close to the property.
Red Ants
Several species of red ants exist in the UK, though they are less likely to invade homes than black garden ants. These ants are usually found in gardens, lawns, woodland areas, and grassy spaces.
Red ants often build small soil mounds that become visible on lawns. Their colonies can be large, and workers defend the nest aggressively if disturbed.
Red ants rarely enter houses in large numbers. They may come into your house if food sources are nearby or if the nest is close to your property.
While they are mainly an outdoor issue, severe infestations around patios, driveways, and gardens may still require pest control if the colony becomes large or difficult to manage.
Pharaoh Ants
The small and pale yellow, pharaoh ants are much less common in the UK, but can cause serious infestations when they appear.
They prefer warm indoor environments and are found in warm buildings such as hospitals, kitchens, apartment blocks, and commercial properties.
They form multiple nests within walls, floors, or hidden spaces inside buildings and their colonies can spread quickly. For this reason, if you discover Pharoah ants, you need professionalant pest control. They are hard to get rid of and treating them incorrectly can cause colonies to split and spread further.
Ghost Ants and Other Imported Species
Occasionally, through international trade, imported ant species appear in the UK. They arrive in plant pots, food shipments, or packaging materials.
Ghost ants are one example. They are tiny ants with pale bodies and darker heads. Like pharaoh ants, they prefer warm indoor environments and form hidden nests inside buildings.
These infestations are uncommon but do occasionally occur in commercial premises, warehouses, or heated properties.
Why Ants Enter Homes
Most ants that appear indoors are simply searching for food and water.
Your kitchens, bins, and food preparation areas can offer easy access to these. And once ants locate food, they leave chemical trails that guide other ants back to the same location.
Even small gaps around doors, brickwork, and pipe entry points can provide access for ants searching for food.
When Ant Pest Control May Be Needed
Many minor ant problems can be managed by removing food sources, using over the counter control and sealing entry points. However, larger infestations often require professional treatment.
If the nest is located beneath paving, inside walls, or under flooring, it can be difficult to eliminate the colony without specialist products and knowledge. Professional pest control focuses on targeting the nest itself rather than just the visible ants.
Final Thoughts
Most ant problems in UK homes are the result of the black garden ant, but other species can occasionally appear depending on the location and environment. Identifying the type of ant involved uncovers where the nest may be located and how the infestation should be treated.
